So before formatting your laptop, make sure you back up all of the documents, pictures, and other files that you want to save. Formatting a hard drive will delete all of the data off of it.

A Level 2 wipe requires sophisticated tools to recover the data, and recovery is not certain. This level of data removal may provide a higher level of comfort for home and small office users where customer or financial data are concerns. An application overwrites the part of the disk where the file previously existed. The next level of removing data is an overwrite, commonly called a Level 2 wipe. This is the most widely used technique for data erasure. Deleting the file does not completely remove the data from the drive and the data may be retrievable using certain software programs. This includes running fdisk or format on the drive.
The first level of removing data is to delete the file. Dell provides links to them only as a convenience for its customers. Once you have decided how much protection you need, you are ready to select the application to perform the wipe.

Remove any removable storage devices and media, such as floppy disks, CDs, PC cards, USB storage devices, and other removable storage. Remove any confidential, proprietary or personal information. Before you ship product(s) to us, back up the data on the hard drive(s) and any other storage device(s) in the product(s).
